WWE SmackDown Live Results – December 27 2016

Welcome to our SmackDown Live coverage and, well, we’ve reached the end of 2016 (thank God). What a year it has been in the world of WWE: Shane McMahon returned to the company, NXT continued to soar, women’s wrestling moved to the forefront, Raw and SmackDown once again divided, the cruiserweight’s made a comeback, and, perhaps most importantly, AJ Styles finally arrived in WWE.

Without going into an entire year-in-review piece, AJ Styles not only came to WWE after years of assuming it would never happen, but Styles has become the MVP. The Phenomenal One debuted almost one year ago at the Royal Rumble, went on to feud with Chris Jericho, turned heel with The Club, beat John Cena repeatedly, moved to SmackDown, and became the WWE World Champion. Styles could not have had a better first year in WWE and he is without doubt one of the biggest names in the company, not to mention he has proved himself the best in-ring performer in the world.

SmackDown has also benefitted in 2016; becoming a much better show since the brand split. With AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose headlining the show since its launch, Bray Wyatt lurking beneath the World title picture, an exciting tag division, a blossoming Women’s Champion in Alexa Bliss, and an amazing comeback for The Miz, SmackDown Live has proven itself as the place for mid-card stars to prove themselves.

But on to tonight’s show, which is not only the final episode of SmackDown for 2016 but guaranteed to be the biggest as well! AJ Styles faces Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin in a Triple Threat for the WWE World Championship, can The Phenomenal One close out the year as Champion? Alexa Bliss finally is forced to put her title on the line against Becky Lynch, after weeks of cheating and sneaking her way out of facing the Lass Kicker. We also have a four-way tag match tonight to determine new number one contenders for The Wyatt Family’s Tag Team Titles. And last but certainly not least, John Cena returns to the blue brand! Cena has been off TV for a while not and his return tonight should set-up the 15X World Champion for the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania season.

That’s a loaded SmackDown show for tonight, which should close out the year with a bang and set course for the next 4 months. Which match are you most excited to see? Will we see any title changed tonight? Be sure to let us know in the comments and enjoy the show!
